A few thoughts

Dear All,

A few thoughts going through my head:
What do people plan to do about the issue of students who haven't read much/any of the book? How did this go last year?

Wasn't the "Speak Hoyt-Schermerhorn" essay good?

Does anyone, let alone Brooklyn College freshpersons, watch John Cassavettes films anymore?

How many people can we expect in our groups?

Yours,

Michael

Hi Michael.

I guess if I run into a lot of students who haven't read the book, I'll discuss some things like his approach to things that have influenced him, and how he writes about them, and I'll ask the students to mention some of their own. I'm new to Brooklyn (I came here not quite 1 year ago, and had never been to New York at all), and still relatively new to the US (2 years), and I think maybe it might be interesting to discuss our various influences given where we came from, what environments we've grown up in, and how they've shaped us - I think our students may come from some very diverse experiences, and it could be a fruitful discussion.

I loved the Hoyt-Schermerhorn essay too!

Personally, I do watch John Cassavettes, but I'm 41, and my taste in movies runs to some offbeat stuff, so I'm not a good barometer. I don't know about our freshman - I somehow doubt they've seen many Cassavettes films, as they seem to not be particularly popular these days, but I'm sure we'll have a few who have seen them, perhaps among prospective film majors. And I think it could still be a useful entry point to discussing film in general and the influences of art on life. So I'll try to spin it that way, I think.
